It is pretty hard to find a town that has not had to deal with this on some level. It is not just a problem in the Boston area, or Bloomington, or where ever. It is a problem for the entire punk community.

Still trying to rationalize my anger and hurt and I am tired of it. No more rationalities. My best friend and band mate, along with three women I love in my community, my little sister, someone in another city have all come forward to tell me about instances of sexual assault against them in a punk/diy setting in the past year. Another story just now permeates on my mind tonight. While I am sure this is something that has never not happened in DIY culture (so we are talking more, which is good) I still can’t help be heartbroken and nearly helpless feeling.

I am so tired of those who run record labels, fraternize with radicals and queers, front “rad” bands, have alternative publishing/zine distros, who book shows at their house or in collective spaces also do not understand how fucking awful it is to be assaulted, marginalized and just downright uncomfortable in every way possible. They do not know how privileged they are or what the word privilege even means. I am tired of them not understanding how they have assaulted before or how wrong it is. I am tired of victim blaming pieces of shit having any power or control in our scene and community.

I am tired of it being whispered about politely. I am tired of the fear of losing a “solid/consistent show space”. The fear of criticizing our scene from the inside because it could cause a bad name.

These people should not book shows anymore. Their shows should not be attended. Bands should not play in their spaces. This should be an issue we talk about all the time. Not just once a year when it’s time to raise money for a rape crisis center. Consciousness raising and support needs to be a part of punk rock all the time. While yes, we need to critique the systems in our society that breed assault, abuse and other forms of exploitation, we also need to be pissed and hold others accountable in our communities first or those systems will never get any better.

You are a creep. You are not harmless. You are not innocent. Get informed or get out.

This show will be very cool. Point Dume is the surf band that I am lucky to be a member of. High Dive is only the coolest of cool punks. Sourpatch might well be the best thing on tour right now. I’ve seen Sourpatch a few times. Here is my review: You see Sourpatch and all of sudden you realize that you are not cool and that you need to rethink everything about everything because these kids just show up and look great and sound great and say awesome things and you are just this loser that has to start from scratch. You’ll be like Usher, “Oh My Gosh!” So many ways to love this band.

Whenever I start taking back control over situations where there has been serious misconduct, I start to wonder, what would it be like if every legit person I knew (my identified anarchist pals especially) held the perpetrators of bullshit in their community accountable immediately? So often we have to wait until things cross a certain line, or get so far out of bounds that they MUST be dealt with—but if we just spoke up when things were still bite sized—if we just stopped things when they were still “just jokes” or rumours—if we just listened to victims when they told us that something or someone was making them uncomfortable (and asked them if they’d like support to make it stop)—we wouldn’t need to stand up to huge problems with horns and fists and heals dug into the dirt.

We also wouldn’t need every fight to be some title-fight where two people square off and inevitable “sides” are taken. Shit wouldn’t even be able to get there. We could all just talk to each other and gather the support to us when things were still ground-floor.

So often assholes get to run this shit because they think no one cares how they behave… and then these same assholes get so far from the shore that we have to make such a huge effort to get to them, that people say “it’s so much trouble! Is this really necessary?” or they decry the situation because they’ve been hearing about it for so long… as though the length of time something has been happening between people makes is less legitimate, instead of more critical. (What kind of backwards shit is that? Seriously. If we are burned out on hearing about it, how desperate must the people living with it be?) When are we going to wake up and see that so much abuse is escalating misconduct—and that it grows every time we are silent—we “stay out of it”—we excuse it—we ignore it—we wait for it to command our attention.

Abusers, assholes, bullies, they all get bolder because they have never faced consequences. They have never been ashamed of themselves. They have never wondered if their actions may cost them something. Collect the toll. Tax them for their behaviour.

A stitch in time saves nine… and I’m fucking sick and bloody tired of having to put nine fucking stitches in everything.

Step up. Speak up. Fight back. Never stop.

if you’re a perpetrator of sexual assault who isn’t willing to take the steps to change and i know about it and you’re at the same show as me i will try so hard to kick you out while telling everyone about it

if you have shows at your house, recognize that it’s your responsibility to kick shitheads out. it’s a bummer to ask someone to get out, i know, but it’s a much bigger problem when you make someone at the show unsafe. it’s worse when someone just doesn’t feel like they can come at all. think about the difference between wanting to have a safe space because it’s some cool punk thing and what you actually have to do to make people feel okay at your house. it’s easy to want to say a place is safe, figuring out who’s safe and what to do with abusive people is the tricky part. these conversations are necessary because of perpetrators. it’s their fault you have to think about it. understand that while it might be hard for you to tell someone they need to leave, that they make people feel uncomfortable, think about how much more difficult that conversation could be for a survivor.

to me, being “punk” just means trying to be better person all the time. it means thinking outside social norms. it means believing people when they say things that are hard to hear and dealing with that accordingly, whether it means ending a friendship temporarily or forever. people won’t change if you don’t make them, and you definitely don’t make them change by letting them hang out at your house, having fun at shows, when someone else is miserable because of it. by not wanting to take sides, understand you are taking the perpetrator’s side. enabling in the smallest way is still allowing them to get away with doing horrifying things. getting kicked out of a show is nothing in comparison to getting the cops involved. remember they are getting off pretty easy. remember they lost privileges when they decided to take advantage of someone else.

if you live in bloomington and have shows at your house, izzy and i would loooove love love to talk to you about how to deal with this and we’ll probably try to get hold of you soon.

Kim is the coolest. If you get off on hurting people, you are not safe in Bloomington.
